Youth uses book waste

08 Jan 2017

Minister of Environment, Natural Resources, and Tourism, Mr Tshekedi Khama has always decried the way people are unfriendly to the environment.
A lot of people do not care where and how they discard waste.
Mbuwa Lesego an 18-year-old young man from Dutlwe village, who has just completed his junior certificate, became a master mind artist from nowhere.
The young man who has never done anything related to art at school is surprisingly able to mould and colour sculptures of animals that he makes from scrap paper.
The sculptures can be used to decorate in houses, and in some mass events.
Lesego collects what people regard as waste, in form of paper, crushes it and uses it together with other ingredients of which some of them include PVA glue and paint to mould and make his sculptures into finished goods.
The sculptures will at the end of the day take the shape and colour of any animal that he intends to make.
“I have never went to any school of arts, I just completed my junior certificate and I found it fit to make use of paper that I usually see being burnt down at the school dumping site, and I can mould all this paper in any form or shape I want it to be,”  he said.
Lesego said he first recognised that he was talented when he made his sculpture of which the idea he describes as an idea from nowhere.
Lesego said he only uses funds from his parents to buy material that he uses together with paper to make these sculptures.
He said after he made and displayed it he realised that he had potential when people started placing orders for sculptures.
According to Lesego, when the first customer came it was the beginning of his growth as he took the money and used it up to buy material needed to mould more sculptures.
Even though he is still based in Dutlwe and relies on residents for a market he has managed to complete and sell up to more than five sculptures at very good and affordable prices.
He said he is still looking for potential sponsors to help him grow his business to be bigger and better.
He also added that he would be happy if government would recognise his potential as this would enable him to take his talent to anothe level.ENDS
