One dies in road mishap

A 24-year-old man of Gathwane perished in a road mishap on Monday .
In an interview with Good Hope Police station commander, superintendent Mogomotsi Kwapa, the young man met his demise when a 16-seater minibus they were travelling in overturned along Gathwane/Gamajaalela road on transit to Good Hope.
Supt Kwapa said the minibus was overloaded with 18 members of Gathwane’s vultures choir on their way to lock horns with Good Hope based choir for New Year festivities.
Supt Kwapa said according to the statements, the driver noticed a furrow at a short range and tried to dodge it, but it was too late as he had already hit it, and was thrown out of way, eventually losing control of the vehicle, making the minibus to overturn three times, killing one and injuring other occupants on impact.
He said six passengers, a driver included, suffered serious injuries and five of them had been referred and admitted at Princess Marina Hospital, while the other patient was admitted at Lobatse’s Athlone Hospital.
He further said the remaining 11 were treated at Good Hope Primary Hospital for minor injuries and discharged the same day.
However, he said police investigations were still ongoing to determine what led to the road mishap.
He also encouraged drivers to avoid speeding on gravel roads as they pose danger to other road users and animals alike.
Meanwhile, he lauded Borolong residents for their cooperation during the festive season.
He said they recorded no other cases of road accidents and other related crimes.
Supt Kwapa said police officers were more visible in his area of jurisdiction as they made frequent visits to all busy spots to curb mischievous and heinous acts as well as setting up unexpected road blocks on gravel roads as a way of sensitising the public about the importance of road safety.
Meanwhile, Lobatse and Phitshane Molopo policing areas recorded no serious crimes and misfortunes during the festive season, but only minor ones such as assaults, which were not that rife as compared to previous seasons. ENDS
