Friends of museum organise heritage marathon

Friends of Museum Society together with the communities of Lerala/Maunatlala constituency have organised a heritage marathon day billed for March 4, 2017.
The deputy director of Friends of the Museum Society, Steven Mogotsi said society assisted the department of national museum and monuments in discharging its mandate.
“We are in a mission to support the protection, preservation and promotion of Botswana’s cultural and natural heritage,” he said.
For her part, chairperson of Friends of the Museum, Thekisego Sabo-Colledge said the heritage marathon organised by the Lerala/Maunatlala constituency community was an outreach programme intended to further promote heritage and increase awareness among communities.
She noted that the marathon fulfills FOMS’s two objectives which are helping promote education through various programmes to the immediate local as well as global communities, promoting and marketing Botswana culture locally, nationally and internationally together with giving participants a tour of the selected heritage sites to reinforce what they learnt at the workshop.
Sabo-Colledge further said the society intends to ensure that more tourists are attracted through organised tour guides and transportation hence creating employment for the locals.
She said this will also attract researchers to sites which will result in more relevant documentation on the country’s heritage sites, increase participation of the youth as one of the priorities for UNESCO in the promotion of heritage and sport tourism. ENDS
