Land board follow 420 undeveloped plots
12 Dec 2016
Chobe Land board will follow 420 undeveloped plots in the district for non-adherence to development covenants in this financial year.
Delivering the chairperson’s remarks at a full council seating in Kasane recently, chairperson for Chobe district council, Mr Mwanota Kachana noted that of the 420, there were 200 residential plots, 120 commercial plots and 100 ploughing fields.
“Hearings for defaulters will be conducted during the fourth quarter of 2016/17,” he said. Non-adherence to development covenants has been a challenge for Chobe Land board over the years as evidenced by people’s inability to timely develop their allocated plots.
Mr Mwanota explained that un-serviced land and lack of funds to develop plots were often cited as reasons for non-development.
When commenting on the issue, councillor for Plateau, Mr Boitumelo Kanyetu opined that it would be unfair to threaten to repossess undeveloped plots while it was known fact that servicing of some of those plots had not been done and availability of sand was difficult as there was currently no reliable burrow pit for the district.
Still on matters relating to land, Mr Kachana noted in his address that there was still reluctance by different institutions and individuals to register their allocated plots despite numerous attempts to publicise their names in local media.
Records indicate that a total of 11 884 plots have been registered out of 14 573 plots as at October 31, 2016.
As such Kachana urged councillors to mobilise communities in pursuit of land registration. The deadline for national land registration project is December 31st. ENDS
