Two police officers appear in court

Two people aged between 37 and 47 recently appeared before Justice Bengbame Sechele of Francistown High Court charged with two counts of Corruption by Public Officer contrary to Section 24 (1) as read with Section 42 and punishable under Section 36 of the Corruption and Economic Crime Act (Cap 08:05), Laws of Botswana.
According to a press release from Directorate on Corruption and Economic Crime (DCEC), investigations revealed that the accused persons Unopa Tlhalerwa and Daniel Tlalanyane on October 21, 2010 in Gaborone while employed by the Botswana Police Service corruptly solicited from Mr Phatudi Ramonyane an unspecified amount of money.
The accused persons seized Mr Ramonyane’s driver’s license without laying any official charge against him for contravening traffic laws.
Tlhalerwa accepted P400 from Ramonyane as inducement for the return of Mr Ramonyane’s driver’s license that Tlhalerwa had seized without charging him for a violation traffic law, being parked at a no parking zone.
The accused persons will appeared yesterday for ruling.
The state was represented by Lesedi Seloka of the Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP) whilst the accused were represented by Busang Manewe of Bogopa Manewe law firm. ENDS
