Rape stock theft on rise in Kanye

26 Oct 2016

Police in Kanye are concerned about a rise in rape and stock theft cases in their area.

Superintendent Mmoloki Mogale said this during an interview recently.

He said they recorded 19 rape cases around the same period last year compared to 24 registered from January to September this year.

As for stock theft, he said 30 cases were recorded in 2015 against 32 this year.

“This month alone, we have recorded five cases of rape which is very alarming” he said.

Nonetheless, out of the five reported cases, he said they managed to arrest four suspects while investigations still continued.

Mr Mogale explained that most of the rape incidents occurred at night clubs and bars especially during weekends.

He said victims were often young women aged between 20 and 25 years, while perpetrators were aged between 20 and 30 years.

He warned that perpetrators usually targeted victims when they went to the toilet and dragged them to a dark alley to rape them while others were raped heading home after the bars closed.

To address this, however, he shared that they usually sensitised members of the public on the dangers lurking in the dark for them when they walked alone at night especially using passages.

He said they had also revived anti-stock theft committees in villages like Gasegwagwa to share strategies and encourage taking care of their livestock.

He advised livestock owners to visit their cattle posts frequently not to rely on herdsmen to do everything. ENDS
