A 29-year-old Zimbabwean man drowned in Thamalakane River near Botswana Defence Force barracks in Maun while trying to cross to the other side with a friend on October 9.

Maun police station commander, Superintendent Motlhaba Ramabya said in an interview that another man was rescued by people in the vicinity.

He said the duo was using a traditional canoe to cross the river to attend a church service at Disana ward. According to an eye witness,  the canoe capsized after strong winds. The police retrieved the deceased's body same day.

Still in Maun, police are investigating an incident in which a 72-year-old woman was found dead at Xhwexa cattle post near Nxaraga. Superintendent Ramabya said they received a report on Saturday when the grand children were worried about whereabouts of their grandmother.

He said the police found the old woman laying restless some metres away from her home and she was taken to the hospital where she was certified dead.

Superintendent Ramabya noted that they arrested a 46-year-old man to assist police with investigations in connection with the incident. It was reported that the suspect was the last person to be seen with the deceased in Komana  on October 7. ENDS
