Sanity assessment denies accused bail
10 Oct 2016
Lobatse Magistrate, Ms Onkarabile Mokone has remanded a 47-year-old man of Wood hall 2 in police custody following a pending sanity assessment.
It is alleged that the accused Thuthuna Mogapi murdered Mr Kagiso Keitlogetse three months ago at a Woodhall 2 shebeen (chibuku depot).
Mogapi requested bail saying that he wanted to seek an attorney to represent him.
However, Ms Mokone said she would only rule on his bail application after she had reviewed his sanity assessment, and advised him to liaise with his family to help him find an attorney in the meantime.
She further said if the accused was committed to the high court for trial, an attorney will be found for him if he cannot afford one.
Public Prosecutor, Sergeant Boitumelo Chinyenge told the court that a newer date for a sanity assessment at Sbrana Psychiatric hospital had been set.
"The accused was initially booked for a sanity assessment on December 1, but a new arrangement has been made for November 24. Therefore, I plead that the accused be further remanded in custody," said Chinyenge. ENDS
