Fire kills two children

13 Sep 2016

Police in Gumare are investigating a case in which a house accommodating six people burnt on Sunday night killing two children and leaving three people with serious injuries while another escaped with minor burns.

According to station commander, Superintendent Phillip Lopang, the police received a call from a resident of Bothatogo ward at midnight, reporting that there was a house on fire.

Superintendent Lopang said four people who included, a 66-year-old woman, an eight-year-old girl, a 10-month old child and a male peace corp volunteer were rescued and rushed to the hospital, but two children were trapped in the burning house.

He said they tried to suppress the fire using four fire extinguishers from the police station, but did not succeed and the fact that Gumare was without water did not help either.

He said after some time, the wall to the children’s bedroom collapsed and the two trapped children could not be rescued. Superintendent Lopang said the cause of the fire was not yet known and the police investigations continue.

Meanwhile, Superintendent Lopang cautioned the public from publishing such incidences on social networks saying it was not only morally wrong but also against the law. ENDS
