Moeti JSS project helps preserve culture
23 Jun 2016
The Assistant Minister of Education and Skills Development, Moiseraela Goya, has commended Moeti Junior Secondary School in Maun for a cultural village project.
Speaking at the launch of the cultural village recently, Goya underscored the importance of cultural preservation.
He said students attained lifelong skills such as basket weaving.
Goya commended teachers and members of the community who helped the students set up the cultural village that comprised traditional hut (ntlo ya bojang and mogwaafatshe) and granary (sefalana).
The assistant minister appreciated the support from UNESCO in reviving and preserving culture by helping to set up the village.
He added that the ASPNET project supported by UNESCO was now in seven schools across the country.
Goya said the Education and Training Sector Strategic Plan (ETSSP) called for students’ involvement in practical subjects as part of their studies upon realisation that not all students were gifted academically.
Furthermore, the assistant minister encouraged students to be committed to their school work.
He said it was worrying that schools across the country were faced with students’ unruly behaviour of disrespecting teachers, drug abuse and dropping out of school due to pregnancies.
Goya said there was hope in programmes such as ASPNET UNESCO clubs, Wildlife Clubs, Scouts Association and others.
Moeti JSS school head, Glady Mafoko, said the school geared towards producing a well-rounded student, hence coming up with the cultural village concept and appreciation of cultural aspects of various Batswana groups.
Mafoko said Moeti results were satisfactory since they topped the North West Region over years, something which she said was a result of teachers’ determination and team work. The Moeti ASPNET cultural village project coordinator, Daniel Stoffel said the project was a result of passion and determination and appreciated the area leadership, community and Phuduhudu Village Development Committee.
