Maun Francistown dominate show

Some Maun and Francistown-based models, fashion designers and dress makers will represent the northern region in the President’s Day arts competition billed for Gaborone in July.

Top three models in the female category, Lingani Shadreck, Thandiwe Moalosi from Francistown and Bonnete Kebiditswe from Maun will share the ramp with models from other regions.

In the male category, Shepherd Mashando from Maun, Lapologang Majanaga from Francistown and Bame Basupi from Francistown scooped positions one, two and three respectively hence will be part of the team that will represent this region. Deputy district commissioner, for Palapye, Ernest Phiri, commended President Lt Gen. Dr Seretse Khama Ian Khama and the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture (MYSC) for the competitions.

He said since inception of this initiative, the competitions grew in leaps and bounds, thus promoting cultural heritage. Phiri said without youth empowerment, the country would go nowhere.Fashion designers, Kadimo Sebera from Maun, Tebogo Batshabeng from Francistown and Gontlemang Motumisi from Maun scooped positions one, two and three respectively.

Francistown-based dress makers, Leah Mosinyi, Onalenna Mosenki and Naomi Philis from Maun scooped positions one, two and three respectively. Acting senior assistant Council secretary, Goloswang Ramogala urged fashion designers to patent their designs as some unscrupulous people could steal their designs. He said local designers matched competititors from other countries, which were ahead in this industry. He said the fashion industry had grown as a result of youth empowerment.

Central District MYSC coordinator, Pako Sikuku, said the northern region was happy to host this competition particularly that this year marked the country’s golden jubilee.

He said though the bar had been raised, the fashion industry faced challenges that included low rate of recognition, small market and limited resources. He urged Batswana to support the fashion industry, commending fashion designers for doing well despite the challenges. He urged them not to sit back and relax at end of the competition, rather should attend expos, fashion shows to stay relevant to this industry. Competition looked at creativity, workmanship, and originality of the garments among others. ENDS
