Mokgatle grants murder suspect bail

Jwaneng magistrate, Mr Odirile Mokgatle has granted Odiseng Kakanyo cash bail of P3 000. Kakanyo, who is facing a single count of murder contrary to section 202 of the Penal Code cap 08:01 of the laws of Botswana, is accused of killing Ditsheko Billboy at Kadue lands during a drinking spree on March 31, 2016. The prosecutor, Inspector Lorato Chabaetsile told court that investigations in the matter were complete and the docket had been sent to the Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP) for assessment of evidence and that the prosecution did not object the bail.

She asked court to grant the accused bail on conditions that he paid P3 000, provided two sureties who would each bind themselves with P1 000, attend all court sessions and not interfere with state witnesses while on bail.

However, Kakanyo told court that he could not afford the said money and pleaded for mercy and to be given a free bail as he earned too little at work. He was however advised that he was facing a serious offence to which the court attached cash bail. 

The 33-year-old herdman of Ranaka was further told that the public, particularly the deceased’s family, had much interest in the case and the court was a governing body, which exercised justice and the rule of law. His remanded warrant was extended to May 9, 2016 in the event that he failed to satisfy bail conditions. ENDS
