Nhabe museum undergoes refurbishment

Nhabe museum is undergoing refurbishment after being assisted with P1million by the European Union  last year.

Speaking during the ground breaking ceremony of the expansion  in Maun recently,  the director of the museum, John Fella said the museum was one of the few remaining museums in the country.

He said the museum had few developments in the past years and was hopeful that with the recently nominated Nhabe museum board, the museum would have the needed development.

Fella said the European Union funding marks the beginning of a new chapter for the museum.

However, Kgosi Tshupegetso Bontsibokae, representing tribal administration, expressed worry that some officials from government departments have not attended meetings, and that contributed to the delay of the starting of the facelift.

Kgosi Bontsibokae, however, encouraged Batswana living in the Ngamiland to take the opportunity of showcasing their historic artifacts in the Nhabe museum because the development creates space for exhibition of their culture.

He explained that people in Ngamiland should submit any cultural artifacts to the museum so that their children would have a chance to know their cultural roots.

He said the artifacts would also have an impact on the cultural benefit in the entire country’s economy.

The project manager, Kirk Bygate said Nhabe Museum in Maun has received a financial aid of P1 million from the European Union (EU), and that the funds were for the renovations to create visibility for the museum.

He said the project would have two phases which would include the construction of two studios, a 100 seater auditorium and a coffee shop as well as ablutions amongst them.

He added that the developments would also enhance the image of the museum. ENDS
