Burglary theft common in Kasane

20 Apr 2016

Police in Kasane have revealed that burglary and house break-ins as well as stealing by servant are the common theft related cases in this tourism town. Speaking in an interview, Assistant Superintendent Dipheko Letamo said burglaries and house break-ins usually occur on Friday nights when people were at entertainment spots. Asst Supt Letamo said employees steal from their organisations due to failure by employers to check regularly their goods.

“Construction companies should learn to keep a daily stock register to ensure that employees do not cost the company money. There should be accountability in the company,” he said. He said some culprits were under police custody and that investigations were ongoing. “Sometimes the culprits escape to neighbouring countries like Zambia and Zimbabwe and we are unable to catch them.”

The police officer said thieves had become smarter and sophisticated nowadays. He advised that victims should not touch anything before the arrival of the police following a burglary report to enable police to collect finger prints.

Furthermore, he said tempering with the crime scene made police investigations difficult. People, he said, have a tendency of re-arranging furniture and sweeping the house after break-ins.Asst Supt Letamo advised the public to inform their neighbours when going away to watch over their houses.

“Batswana should always be cautious and report any suspicious movements around their neighbourhood,” he said. END
