In commemorating 100 years since the death of Shakespeare, Maitisong recently held a an inspirational evening through a show dubbed, Shakespeare o a tshela.

The show consisted of various academics, artists as well poets who proved that indeed Shakespeare was still alive and relevant.

In her opening remarks,  the British High Commissioner to Botswana, Katy Ransome commended the performers, saying that it was through their hard work and commitment that greatness has been casted upon them. She said Shakespeare oa tshela, was launched last year October, of which ever since there has been a series of films.

“Some people are born great, some achieve greatness and some have greatness cast upon them, all of your performances have already achieved greatness through the culmination of your efforts,” she said.

The performances included various acts of Shakespeare’s works, such as excerpt from Twelfth Night covered by St Joseph’s College, Maru-a-Pula School, Kagiso Senior Secondary and Ledumang Senior Secondary, Macbeth, Othello and different sonnets.

Actors selected by the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Culture, unpacked and recreated the Measure for Measure, providing an easy understanding of the play, thereby presenting their own interpretation of Shakespeare.

In brief, Shakespeare’s Measure for Measure centres around the fate of Claudio, who was arrested by Lord Angelo, the temporary leader of Vienna.

Angelo was left in charge by the Duke, who pretends to leave town but instead dresses as a friar to observe the goings-on in his absence. Angelo is strict, moralistic, and unwavering in his decision-making.

He decides that there is too much freedom in Vienna and takes it upon himself to rid the city of brothels and unlawful sexual activity, an act which the group manages to excellently portray. ENDS
