Motorists ignore traffic laws
10 Apr 2016
Police in Kasane have charged 1 308 motorists between January and March for using road unworthy vehicles.
Responding to a questionnaire on why the checkpoints were set-up, Kasane Police Station Commander, Silton Fidzani said the idea was to detect crime, check vehicle road worthiness and to sensitise motorists on road safety.
He said most motorists were guilty of speeding, driving without a license, not wearing safety belt, failure to obey road signs and driving a vehicle without a PrDP license.
Supt Fidzani added that 13 accidents have been recorded in Kasane between the start of the year and the end of March.
He said motorists in Kasane were interviewed and they had different perspectives about checkpoints as some felt they were a waste of time while others felt it was a good initiative.
Supt Fidzani said one of the reasons of mounting checkpoints was to detect crime. Ends
