The district coordinator for Bot50, Edna Maine has encouraged people in the Southern District to organise and run festivals in the district aimed at creating the necessary hype, excitement and awareness for Bot 50 celebrations to ensure the event gets the attention it deserves.
She said this during a presentation at the just ended Southern District Council session in Kanye meant to inform councillors about Bot50 preparations.
She said radio and television discussions would be held to intensify publicity about Botswana 50 celebrations.
She said sharing ideas of the past, present and future through debates and profiling the country since 1966 up to date would create a picture that shows that the country deserves to celebrate, as it has achieved economically and politically.
She said Botswana was a beacon of democracy and a middle income country.
She also said there would be an interactive electronic platform that could be downloaded on mobile phones and tablets showing BOT50 events and resources such as heritage sites, torch route map and national monument sites.
She said in revival of national symbols; the public needs to be educated on the use and meaning of national symbols, adding that the Office of the President was consolidating the literature on national symbols.
The public needs to know the national anthem and its connotation as well as the coat of arms and Botswana flag, she said.
She said religious organisations should play a critical role in the country’s golden jubilee, adding that they promote unity and bridge the religious divide.
She said the expectation on local leadership was to come up with activities that would showcase the district’s success from 1966 to 2016 and also showcase the heritage and rich history of the country. Ends
