Ritungee aims to restore Herero culture
23 Mar 2016
The chairperson of Ritungee Cultural Association, Ezekiel Orman says the association is working towards resuscitating traditions of the Herero people.
Orman said in an interview recently that the situation was so bad that some elders and young people could not speak Seherero.
It was upon this realisation, he said, that the elders resolved to establish the association in 2000.
Since inception, the Ritungee Cultural Association has staged a cultural festival and coached tribesman from Namibia and South Africa on the basics of Herero customs.
“The festival provided followers with a chance to be initiated on Herero cultural aspects such as dress code, conduct of weddings, herero songs and many others,” stated Orman.
He said last year his tribesman from Botswana went to Bethanie in Namibia and that the Baherero of South Africa would host the cultural spectacle this year.
Meanwhile, the association head envisions great things for the society.
“We want to construct a school that will strictly teach herero traditions and language, but the school will not in anyway disrupt mainstream education as its affairs will be conducted outside school hours.
We also want to establish our own cultural centre that will host our events,” he says.
Orman conceded that Baherero youth involvement in the association was minimal and appealed to them to be proactive. Ends
