Botswana to celebrate 50 years in style
03 Mar 2016
As the country moves closer to celebrating the milestone of reaching 50 years of independence, the preparations of the main event are advanced to make it spectacular.
The Bot50 coordinator Charity Kgotlafela told this to the South East district full council session on Tuesday.
She said there is need to dorn Botswana colours and adorn the country with national flag colours to hype the upcoming Independence Day celebrations.
Kgotlafela explained that the government has appointed an organising committee to organise the main event.
“The government has given out money for all to enjoy independence celebrations wherever they are in all parts of this country,” added Kgotlafela.
She explained that during the beginning of the year, the main organising committee sent some of its members to some parts of the country to help communities in strategising for the Independence Day celebrations.
However, she said it is the objective of the main committee to ensure that each community celebrates the day in its own style.
Kgotlafela also mentioned that they have got standard plans of how they want the celebration to look like.
She stated that last year October they came up with a plan that all governmental staff should wear Botswana colours on Fridays and whoever fails to do so will be charged P5.
She explained that on September 25, 2016 in every village around the country there will be a religious event at the kgotla where all churches will come together for a service. Kgotlafela also said that local district music festivals should be held around the country to allow youth to showcase their talent.
She urged Batswana to keep the country clean in order to celebrate the Independence Day in a tidy place.
During comments, councillor Nora Nkwe lamented that she is impressed that young people have been included to partake in the ceremony.
“I’m very happy that young people will be part of the ceremony and their talent will be recognised,” explained Nkwe.
Councilor Douglas Kereng asked Kgotlafela to allow villages to draw up their budget and send it to the organising committee to finance it. Ends
