Khama steals polka show
28 Feb 2016
President Lt Gen. Dr Seretse Khama Ian Khama stole the show with his stunning dance moves at the polka festival in Tsabong on Saturday (February 27) evening.
The annual event comprised the best 10 polka groups from around the country.
Just when some were starting to get bored because of what seemed like routine dance moves from various groups, the President took to the dance floor to the amazement of the spectators.
He was joined by a female dancer from one of the groups and they displayed well choregraphed moves as if they trained together.
Earlier on when giving remarks, the Minister of Youth, Sport and Culture, Thapelo Olopeng, thanked the President for promoting culture.
He pointed out that polka was growing at an alarming rate considering that the genre only became popular countrywide in 2011 when it was included in the Presidential competitions and with only few groups participating but as of last year, 27 groups took part in the competition.
The minister said his ministry intended to promote culture because it would mould Batswana to be a nation that had Botho.
He challenged those who wanted to improve culture to come forth because the ministry was ready and willing to help them achieve their dreams.
The area MP, Frans Van der Westhuizen, also thanked the President for having shown interest in Kgalagadi and in particular helping polka music grow.
He said he hoped the festival would go a long way in developing and diversifying the tourism sector.
Meanwhile, the group which won the Presidential competitions last year in the polka category, Traapvas Polka group from Khuis had the crowd eating from the palm of their hand and they were heftily rewarded as the guests of honor and spectators alike thronged the stage to give them money. ENDS
