The Ministry of Youth, Sport and Culture will host the Kgalagadi Polka Festival on Saturday at the Tsabong Showgrounds. The aim is to revive Polka music and dance in Kgalagadi.

In an interview, district commissioner, Malebogo Mosala said the festival started last year, and that was Kgalagadi was the because it has various groups of Polka.
She said  the groups that would be taking part would be the best 10 from last year’s President Day competitions which are Honey Polka, Kalahari Polka, Traapvas, Tsabong Polka, Young Stars Polka, Gareng ga Dithotha Polka, Ghanzi Polka, Welkom and Speel Nog Reharko Polka.

She said the festival attracts countless people from different parts of  the country.
Ms Mosala said  there was no charge at entrances because it was a festival and not a competition.

She clarified that the festival inspires people and other groups to be original and unique.
She further explained that the ministry has taken control on the festival, but that their hope was to hand it to other departments such as the Department of Arts and Culture.

She said the groups would be provided with accommodation and food and that the best group would earn an appearance fee of P1 000 at the end of the show.
Mosala also said the ministry was preparing for the Khawa Dune Challenge, which would be held at Khawa in May. Ends
