Freaka Zoid dance group emerged position 1 in the newly dance competition dubbed Grandmaster dance challenge 2015 which was held on Tuesday evening in Gaborone.

Freka Zoid is a group of three young men: Salim Lesenyamotse, Jones Phiri and Linda Bojang and they were awarded P5 000 cash price, one year contract of mentoring and management by the artist manager and tour tickets courtesy of Sunrise Travel and Tours. The competition was held in December last year at the Gaborone Mmantlwaneng Theater, Westwood International School.

Speaking during the award ceremony, the director of Mike and Ms T company which runs the Grandmaster Dance Challenge, Mike Gare said Grandmaster Dance Challenge is a dance competition that is initiated to promote dance art in Botswana and to bring more platforms to local dancers for growth and more development. 

He said the aim of the competition was to unearth a versatile dancer to be the dancer of the year and motivate other dancers through teaching five dancers with the help of the Grandmasters Dance challenge choreographers.

“As an empowerment corporation it is our responsibility to see to it that we promote dance arts and see that individuals who are in the industry are able to see the art potential in their environment,” he said.

Gare highlighted that there is no doubt that dance arts have been forsaken instead of seeing it through the lens of entrepreneurship. 

“The implication for such negligence has affected the majority of those who are serious in the industry as it became a contributing factor in failing to find support,” he said.

He noted that Grandmasters Dance Challenge has made it a commitment to see that there is revival in the dance art by offering training and workshops to lay basic skills to impart passion and skill needed to pursue a career in the industry.

The Grandmaster Dance Challenge will run again this year and it calls for all dancers, to come forth for the competition and auditions will be in cities and towns around Botswana, the selection of the finalist top 10 will be held in Gaborone. Ends
