Nkhwa turns trash into beauty
15 Feb 2016
Each and every single person has something that they are good at. Some are academically gifted while others are born with astonishing talent.
The latter is true in the case of 25 year-old Oteng Nkhwa from Nshakashogwe, who is known for his interesting work of art. He makes beautiful ornaments such as neck pieces, bracelets and earrings out of garbage materials.
Nkhwa mentioned in an interview with BOPA recently that starting his business was not that difficult because most of the materials he uses are readily available.
This is of course with the exception of glue, thread and fabrics for, which he has to dig deep into his pockets to acquire.
Recycled resources such as newspapers, plastics, wires, bottle caps and used zips are Nkhwa’s primary materials.
Lack of employment and love for beauty and fashion motivated this hard working entrepreneur to venture into beauty ornaments business.
Although the business is still at its infancy stage,Nkhwa remains hopeful of a positive growth going forward.
Due to high rental costs, he could not afford to have his own shop, instead he sells his products by displaying them in front of shops, during exhibitions and market days as well as going around the village.
Another challenge that he is faced with is customers who disappear without settling their debts, thereby reducing his profits.
Nkhwa’s work is well known in the country as he has entered many competitions and shows such as in 2013 and 2014 when he entered the Department of Youth competitions but did not win.
However this did not stop him as he tried his luck at Botswana Consumer Fair in 2015 and got P10 000 as prize money. He also went to Tutume Agriculture Fair and three of his products took first prize each in 2015 and he has benefited a lot from the shows as he managed to network with other companies, sell his products, and market his business.
