Murder suicide concern villagers

09 Feb 2016

Leaders in Sefhare have expressed concern over the high number of murder and suicide incidents recorded last year in the Tswapong village. In an interview, Kgosi Mpeo Mpeo lamented that 2015 was full of grief for his villagers as a high number of youths were murdered while others took their own lives.

Kgosi Mpeo attributed the incidents to abuse of alcohol and drugs as a number of the incidents occurred at drinking spots. He said the use of dagga is rife in Sefhare. He pointed out that even school-going children are into drugs.

Kgosi Mpeo condemned parents who sell drugs, and appealed to the community to report drug dealers to the relevant authorities. Pastor Lazarus Mmopelwa, who is also the chairperson of Baruti Association in Sefhare, said they would work tirelessly within their community to deal with the situation this year. He said that they will work with health workers to sensitise the community on health and social issues.

A psychiatrist at Sefhare primary hospital, Ms Rose Marage, said that it is disheartening to see young people killing each other, while others are committing suicide at an alarming rate. She encouraged the public to always seek help from dikgosi, police officers, social workers and counsellors whenever they are faced with difficulties. Ends
