Lucas Gobuiwang of Mogotsi ward in Molepolole appeared before Magistrate Lindiwe Makgoro on a single count of breaking into Molepolole Botswana Telecommunications Limited (BTCL) offices and stole scratch cards valued over P28 000
Gobuiwang, together with four others still at large, broke into BTCL offices on January 31 and stole BTCL scratch cards of different value.
Molepolole acting station commander, Assistant Superintendent Salome Segale, said in an interview that they managed to apprehend the accused following a tip-off by a passerby who heard a blast from one of the buildings around Mafenyatlala Shopping Mall.
The passerby, who had visited ATM machines, alerted the security officers who were nearby. Their efforts to apprehend the suspects were distracted by other perpetrators who were watching outside the building throwing stones at them.
Two of the five suspects entered the building through a toilet window before they gained entrance to BTCL offices through the ceiling where they allegedly appeared with bags containing over P28 000 worth of BTCL scratch cards airtime.
One of them was arrested the same night with some of the stolen items. Molepolole police appealed to members of the public to help with information that could lead to the arrest of the perpetrators.
Meanwhile two middle aged men of Molepolole were severely assaulted on February 3 after a foiled attempt to break into Moruakgomo Junior Secondary School in the wee hours of the morning.
The suspects were allegedly traced to their respective homes through their foot prints by security officers and members of the public who later took the law into their hands by assaulting the suspects before they were apprehended.
The two, who appeared to be having difficulty in walking with visible severe injuries , were escorted to Scottish Livingstone Hospital to seek medical attention.
In a separate incident, the police were in search of a Medie herdboy who allegedly stabbed and killed a fellow Zimbabwean herdboy at Medie on February 1.
Assistant Superintendent Segale confirmed that the two had initially engaged in a fight that led to the death of the Zimbabwean man. Ends
