Maun to celebrate centenary

03 Feb 2016

Maun is set to celebrate its centenary this year when the village turns 101 years after the actual centenary celebrations failed last year. In an interview, the new interim committee vice chairperson, Baagi Mogalakwe said the week-long celebrations were set for August 2016.

She said last year celebrations flopped due to lack of liaising between the committee with the district commissioner and government departments. Mogalakwe said they plan to rope in the district commissioner, heads of department and other organisations this month to prevent the shortfall by the former committee.

She said the celebrations would showcase the diverse cultures of the Ngamiland people. She said they intend to showcase various themes such as tourism, which is a main source of economy in the region.

The Ngamiland region of which Maun is the capital, prides itself with different tribes mainly Basarwa, Batawana, Bayeyi, Baherero, Bakgalagadi, Bahambukushu and others.

The people of Ngamiland were well known for their skills in crafts and weaving; especially those from Shorobe  and Seronga in the Okavango area, thus Ngamiland has earned a reputation as the bedrock of crafts.

Furthermore, Mogalakwe said they had support from Maun people based in other places such as Gaborone and Francistown who had pledged to mobilise others once plans were at advanced stage. Ends
