Police impound Illegal public transport vehicles

26 Jan 2016

Mochudi police have launched a campaign geared at impounding illegal public transport vehicles.

Mochudi Police Station Commander, Supt Olebile Sitale said in an interview that already some vehicles have been impounded and the owners charged with carrying passengers for reward without a passenger permit.

Supt Sitale said the issue has been a thorn in the flesh for sometimes, and has irked legal transport operators who decried that they were being ripped off.

He said the campaign would help curb the problem which has continued to cripple the transport industry.

Furthermore, he said the vehicles were not roadworthy and that they never went for an inspection, adding that they pose danger to passengers and other drivers.

Supt Sitale said the operation was still ongoing and that they would reveal statistics when it comes to an end.

He said the penalty for the offence begins at P400 for first offenders, and P800 for second offenders followed by appearing before a magistrate court for tougher penalties. Ends
