Maun police investigate murder

Maun police are investigating the death of a 23-year-old woman of Nxharaga settlement near Maun.

In interview, Superintendent John Kelebeng, said the police were still searching for the suspect who was the boyfriend to the deceased.

Supt Kelebeng said the suspect had used a log to hit the girlfriend. Prior to that, the suspect had set two huts on fire before he took the girlfriend outside the village where her body was found motionless. 

He said the incident happened on December 20 night, but was reported on December 21. The woman was certified dead at Letsholathebe II Memorial Hospital.

Supt Kelebeng said what could have caused a conflict between the two lovers remained unknown. In another incident, a 55-year-old man of Qowa settlement near Gumare was killed by an elephant on December 21 night.

Supt Kelebeng said the man was accompanied by his 11-year-old son who managed to flee when the elephant charged.

Still in Maun, the police were investigating a case of unlawful wounding at Xhobe settlement in which a 35-year-old man hit his 38--year-old girlfriend with the back of an axe on her forehead on December 18, the girlfriend was hospitalised.

Supt Kelebeng said a 27-year-old man had injured his brother with a spear at Sedie ward in Maun due to a misunderstanding and the victim was hospitalised, while a 34-year-old injured his cousin with a knife.

Supt Kelebeng therefore cautioned people to refrain from violence and use of dangerous things when they had misunderstandings but rather seek mediation from family members. He said violence was rife in Ngamiland with some resulting in deaths.Ends
