Charma Gal finest

Charma Gal was of the toast of the night at Botswana Musicians Union (BOMU) awards. 

The energetic songbird scooped four awards, which was the highest number of awards won by an individual.

She walked away with the album of the year award for her Sekuta sa ga Charma Gal album, where she was pitted against BK Proctor, MMP Family and Amantle BW.

She also won song of the year, Sekuta sa ga Charma Gal where she battled it out with Amantle’s Moratiwa, MMP Family’s Lebala ka Nna and MC Maswe with Zhwamaronga.

There was also the best female artist category in which Charma Gal beat Samantha Mogwe and Amantle. She also won the best mosakaso category In other categories, MMP Family outdid Eskimos, Heart Beat Family and Amanandos in best group or combo.

Best new comer went to Amantle while best male artist was scooped by n Shumba Ratshega, beating Mc Maswe, Vee and Noello. There was also best folkore which went to Idle, best packaged album was won by Samantha Mogwe, best kwaito; MMP Family, best disco went to Khoza.

Among other categories were best house kwasa which went to Vee, best traditional scooped by Shumba Ratshega and best music video went to Heartbeat Family. 

When speaking at the awards ceremony, the Minister of Youth, Sport and Culture, Thapelo Olopeng, called for extensive public education on piracy. Minister Olopeng said piracy was rampant and it badly affected artists.

He, however, appreciated growth in the music industry and noted that government would continue to support the sector through programmes such as President’s Day activities.

Olopeng said government was working towards the formation of an arts council, which would regulate performing arts industry. Ends
