Bridal baby showers bring society together

27 Oct 2015

Bridal and baby showers are seen as unique and important activities in the society. Through these, it seems the society is developing from a self-subsistent life to a more inter dependent life.

Bridal shower is normally held for the bride to be and is treated as a gift party for the upcoming matrimonial home plus financial support and counsel for the bride.

During an interview recently, Monicah Kgatusi of Newtown ward in Maun said in many occasions, she organised some bridal showers for her friends and relatives.

She noted that as an organiser, she planned for the event with others by making an agreement on how much each would contribute. Kgatusi said they did that as a way of support to the bride.

One Ms Kefilwe Basotli of Sedie Ward in Maun said before she tied the knot, her relatives organised a bridal shower for her.

She said it was a blessing to her as she was taught a lot of responsibilities on how to take care of the family and she was thankful for all the kitchen utensils that she received.

Men also celebrate the groom’s party, which is commonly known as bachelor or stag party and it bears same fruits as a bridal shower.

Meanwhile, baby showers also do the same to women, but in this case it is a celebration for the unborn baby expected by the mother.

It is seen as a transformation of a woman into a mother and in most cases it is attended by women and it is during the event that the mother is taught the importance of being a mother.

In most cases gifts are given as a surprise without the mother’s knowledge and these include diapers, blankets, baby bottles and toys. These social gatherings play a crucial role to both women and men as they unite and cooperate, thus developing social skills. Ends
