26 Oct 2015

Maun police have recorded incidents of drowning in which two people lost their lives on Sunday morning (October 25).

Officer commanding, Senior Superintendent Chabaesele Kesupetswe, confirmed in an interview that in one incident, a 12-year-old boy of Sekgoma Primary School drowned while swimming with others at Thamalakane River near Thamalakane Primary School.

He said they received a report around 11am from a wildlife officer who was passing-by.

In another incident, a 36-year-old man of Sedie ward also drowned in Thamalakane River while swimming with others near Back Peckers complex.

Senior Superintendent Kesupetswe said they managed to retrieve the duo the same day and they were certified dead at Letsholathebe II Memorial hospital.

Senior Spt Kesupetswe appealed to the public to stop swimming in the river because it was infested with dangerous animals. He also advised the swimmers to use life jackets in order to protect themselves from the hazardous environment.

The police chief appreciated that Ngamiland is an extremely hot region but advised people to use swimming pools.

He appealed to the parents to keep their children under constant supervision all the time adding that they should take it upon themselves to identify hazardous situations to which unsuspecting children might be exposed to. ENDS
