Maun police have arrested a 33-year-old man for unlawful possession of five pieces of elephant tusks.

The acting station commander, Assistant Superintendent Oarabile Hulela, said they acted on a tip off and found the man with the pieces at his home in Botshabelo ward. He said the suspect was in police custody while investigations were ongoing to establish where he got the tusks.

Still in Maun, three middle aged men were arrested for unlawful possession of a substance suspected to be dagga in Boseja ward. Asst Superintendent Hulela said the suspects were arrested while police officers were investigating a different case.

The trio will be charged after an examination of the substance. Meanwhile, a fatal accident was recorded along the A3 road over the weekend involving a vehicle which was heading to Francistown from Maun.

Asst Superintendent Hulela said the accident occured a few kilometres from Motlopi at around 12:45pm. 

He said the vehicle, which had four passengers including the driver, veered off the road and hit a tree before rolling over. A 31-year-old  died in the accident while two passengers sustained serious injuries.

The deceased was certified dead  at Letsholathebe II Memorial Hospital and the two passengers who sustained fractures were recuperating at the  hospital. One of the passengers is a solder while the other is a student from one of the junior secondary schools in Ghanzi.

Asst Superintendent Hulela said the driver, 29, survived with no injuries. Investigations to find the cause of the accident are ongoing. Ends
