07 Oct 2015

A safe and a clean environment is important in promoting cleanliness and good health.

This was said by the environmental education coordinator, Ms Maipelo Tlhomelang during a clean-up campaign held by Metsimotlhabe Primary School.

Speaking in an interview recently, Ms Tlhomelang said they were prompted to embark on the campaign after a realization that litter was scattered all over in the village and the school. She noted that this was an eyesore and could also harbor diseases.

She said the campaign is important as it does not only help in keeping the surroundings clean but it goes a long way in teaching children about cleanliness and promotes good health.

She said they hope that this will not be a one week activity but will continue throughout the year.

Ms Tlhomelang said they are grateful for the support that they have received from Mogoditshane/ Thamaga sub district council that provided the school with gabbage bins and for transporting litter to dumping sites for safe disposal.

She also noted that the clean-up campaign also helped to educate children on environmental issues such as the 3R’s namely recycling, reuse and reduce.

To the students who were part of the campaign, this provided them with an opportunity to put in practice what they learnt in class.

One of the students Thabiso Serameng said he learnt that it is important to keep the environment clean in order to prevent diseases while Daphney Jackson said the clean-up campaign made her realise the importance of a safe and a clean environment. Ends
