Mauritius council benchmarks at KDC

05 Oct 2015

Kweneng District Council last week hosted two officials from the council of Vacoas Phoenix in Mauritius. The two officials were the mayor, Mr Navin Ransoondar and the chief executive officer, Mr Dayal Nandraj for a five-day benchmarking exercise.

The two officials came for a benchmarking exercise on the councils turnaround strategies which they started in 2011.

The strategies are the Citizen Observatory Board (COB), anti-corruption strategy: whistle blowing and quality management system among others. The visit comes after a twinning agreement when the two councils signed a Memorandum of Understanding in Mauritius.

In an interview, Kweneng District Council secretary, Mr Wahza Tema said they have twinned with the Mauritius council, saying during their visit the delegation toured council projects such as the Molepolole Bus Terminus, Gamodubu Regional Landfill and some poverty eradication projects. They also observed the Kweneng District Council in session.

He pointed out that they also learnt about some council initiatives such as the quality management system, adding that last month they received communication from the Botswana Bureau of Standards (BOBS) that they have now been certified under ISO 9001:2008.

The council secretary said after the visit, the Council of Vacoas Phoenix will send some of their staff to come and learn about the initiatives so as to implement them in their council.

For his part, Mr Ransoondar said they were thankful of the opportunity, saying they were hoping to learn a lot from the KDC’s turnaround strategies.

He further said they would also  learn on issues of development and culture as the two councils have established a mutual relationship. The delegation returned on the 26 September. Ends
