Molepolole fashion designers rise to occasion

05 Oct 2015

Molepolole fashion designers recently organised a fashion show at Mafenyatlala Mall in Molepolole where they showcased their designs.

Some of these fashion designers included Tefo Sekotlo of Paccino Designs, Grace Sekotlo of Maps Creations and Edward Masukudu of I Cause Traffic Fashions, Vinoh Fashions, and DihDah Fashions.

In a sideline interview with the organizer of the show, Edward Masukudu, who has just completed his degree in fashion design at the University of Botswana said he came up with the idea of bringing together fashion designers from Molepolole to showcase their designs for market exposure.

He noted that he personally met with some fashion designers when they were submitting their designs for the Presidential Competitions, saying he further asked the  youth department in Molepolole for the contacts of other fashion designers and told them about his idea of working together to establish a brand in fashion in their home village.

Masukudu  further said they did this on a zero budget, saying they expected more sponsors to support them but only a few sponsors being  Lemepe Lodge and Lolontle Décor offered them support.

He pointed out that events of this magnitude require more sponsorship  hence the show he said was not of a standard they desired, but hoped that next time the show will be massive as they are planning to make it an annual event hence challenging sponsors to get on board and support them.

He said they chose to showcase their designs at the mall since it’s a place of social interaction and also that since there are minimal social amenities in Molepolole,  they also wanted to bring entertainment particularly to the youth.

When quizzed about the kind of material she chose for designing her clothing, Grace Sekotlo of Maps Creations based in Molepolole at Lekgwapheng ward said she chose chiffon as it’s a kind of odd material though saying it is easy to work with.

She said she designs everyday clothing, office-wear, wedding attires amongst others, saying the price she charges depends on the kind of material used and the design or pattern, saying the more expensive the material the higher the price.

She further said she is inspired by things around her including the environment. For Masukudu, he said he chose African Print material because it is trending and also that it’s a way of celebrating the African identity. Ends
