Gaborone colour run thrills

02 Oct 2015

Batswana turned up in droves for the first Colour Run, also known as the Happiest 5km on the Planet, at the Grand Palm recently.

The Colour Run, which is expected to happen every year, is a unique paint race that celebrates healthiness, happiness and individuality. It was a sight to behold as people of different ages, from toddlers in prams to the elderly, took part in throwing paint at each other as they ran a fun filled 5km race.

Even though some people did not run but just walked the 5km, it was evident that Batswana had been looking forward to the race and socialising with each other, which they also did after with a party that was dominated by massive colour throws.

The Colour Run was founded in March 2011 by Travis Snyder and it is now the single largest event series in the world, and has exploded since its debut in Phoenix, Arizona.

It has reportedly tripled its growth, hosting more than 300 events in over 50 countries in 2014, and now Botswana.

With an enchanting atmosphere and energy, Batswana were truly excited with the first Colour Run and when the sun went down, the star lit party came to life. Glowtastic colour zones, illuminating bubble zones, sweet photo opportunities, glowing colour shows and bumping music gave runners an experience to remember and they looked like they would be coming back next year.

With the day event, most people seemed unhappy at the organisation of the team and the race starting late after it was said to start at 7:30 am.

“Why could we not have the race very early in the morning at 6am even,” exclaimed one participant who felt that with the temperature, by 7:30am hours, it was already blazing hot and not suitable for running.

Nonetheless, with its main objective mainly about having fun and healthiness, and also involving people of all demographics, it truly was an amazing event and one cannot wait for the next one. Ends
