Golden jubilee beckons

Botswana will celebrate the 49 years of independence with a bit of a twist this year with the launch of a roving torch to mark the 365 days countdown to Botswana’s golden jubilee.
The torch will traverse all districts for Batswana to celebrate and display their success in their respective districts. Something of interest to the youth is the electronic music festival at Gaborone Cricket Club which would be beamed live to five fan parks across the country.
Briefing the media on Wednesday BOT50 coordinator Charity Kgotlafela stated that the festival would also be viewed on all the mobile applications across the world through the use of the three mobile networks in Botswana.
She stated that the music festival idea has been borrowed from other countries adding that it would ensure that people gathered at fan parks in Francistown, Maun, Ghanzi, Tsabong and Serowe feel part of the crowd that would be gathered at Cricket club.
The coordinator said they wish to expand the concept to next year by erecting fan parks in all the 16 districts. Kgotlafela said they are embarking on branding Botswana this year by hosting flags in the city and other major towns to hype the 50th anniversary.
She explained that the celebrations will commence with the interfaith church festival on September 27, and the Independence eve at the National Stadium which would continue the next day with the major celebration.
She said as Botswana approaches the 50 years milestone it is fitting for the country to come together and tell Botswana’s story. “It’s time for the nation to take an introspection and see what we have achieved and where we have fallen and also thank our founding fathers who enabled us to be where we are today,” she noted.
