'Music saved me'

“If only I hadn’t moved to Kanye, I would have joined the notorious merubisi gang, and I know that could have been the end of the road for me and my future in the music industry.”
These were the words of 22-year - old Romeo Mogorosi, popularly known as Dj Romeo Tha-Medley who is passionate about music. Dj Romeo is a Thamaga -based DJ who is a resident DJ at a popular night club called Erbn.
Born in Soshanguve in South Africa, he came to Botswana when he was two-years-old and settled in Thamaga where he did his form 3 at Letlole Mosiele secondary school before moving to Seepapitso senior school in Kanye for his BGCSE. He described his move to Kanye as a blessing because he believes that staying in Thamaga could have derailed his life as he mixed with the wrong crowd.
“I was taking alcohol and smoking while still a student. I believe this resulted in my poor academic performance in BGCSE, and coming back to Thamaga in 2011 meant I had to change because I did not want to stress my mother who was always worried about my wayward behavior,” he said.
Dj Romeo The-Medley then decided to work on his passion for music as a way of mending his ways. His older brother had a music system which he used to play at parties and wedding ceremonies, and so this kept him busy, away from alcohol.
“I always wanted to play as a DJ at big clubs and was really determined to work very hard to get there. My passion for music introduced me to Lucky Ranko popularly known as Dj Lucy of the RB2 night crawlers fame.
He took me to one bar where he introduced me to a whole new and different environment to play as a DJ and this gave me exposure and experience,” he said.
He said with time Dj Lucy realised his potential and took him to Erbn club where he played alongside him, albeit at no pay, though he really enjoyed what he was doing as it kept him busy.
“Then in 2014 I signed a contract with Erbn night club to become a resident DJ, and I got paid every month. I was very happy because I knew my passion would take me to high places and put food on the table,” he said.
He said ever since he became a resident DJ at the club, he has met a lot of DJs such as DJ Sly of RB2, DJ Oats and DJ Lucy whom he said play an important role in his growth in the industry as they motivate him to work hard and be the best in the industry.
This year he competed in the President’s competitions just to gain experience. “My main aim is to enter the competitions again next year and that’s when I will be fighting for position one,” he said.
He said even though he spends most of his time in a night club, he is not tempted to return to the bottle or smoke as his focus is to work hard and reach his goals in life. He said he realised that alcohol has the potential to destroy one’s future.
The young DJ says he has taught about three young people in Thamaga to DJ and he is happy with the results as all of them were doing well. He intends opening an academy where he will teach people about music as a way of giving back to the community and helping in fighting alcohol and drug abuse. Ends
