DCAT reaches out to public

07 Sep 2015

The Dithubaruba Cultural Festival was not just all fun and games. Famous for promoting and appreciating the diverse cultural practices in Kweneng District, the festival was characterized by song and dance as well as traditional cuisine.  Some organisations  took advantage of the festival to showcase their products.

Among them was the Diamond Control Awareness Team (DCAT), which is a multidisciplinary committee that formed one of the leverage arms of the main diamond control team.

At Dithubaruba, the team saw interacted with the public and sensitised them about diamond protection and the consequences of illegal diamond dealings.

Masego Malila, who was part of the team, said as a voluntary DCAT member, she hoped to bring the message closer to the public.

She stated that many nations in Africa had been sidelined in the global diamond trade because of dealing in blood diamonds and by joining DCAT, she hoped she would make a difference and see to it that Botswana was never covered by this dark cloud.

The team membership is unlimited and open to both employees and non-employees.

Since inception in 2001, their primary objective hads been to inform all stakeholders including employees, contractors and the community about the importance that diamonds have on the development of the country.

If people were to steal them, they would be crippling the economy, which was mainly based on diamonds sales. Malila went on to add that the DCAT always appreciated those who shared information on diamond trafficking activities.

She was glad the community of Molepolole was interested in their organisation as they flocked to the stall in high numbers asking questions. Ends
