Quite often a teacher and a parent are the ones usually recognised with desires and efforts towards student’s excellence in academics as compared to other people. However that is not the case with a Kwasa Kwasa artiste Kagisanyo Thankane also known as Bee Mosika of the Seleetswane dance.
The youngster has come up with an initiative to offer secondary and primary school learners free edutainment on the bad effects of smoking and alcohol through his music as well as awarding cash to best students as a way of inspiring them in their studies.
Speaking in a recent interview with BOPA, this youngster noted that he started his music career in Jwaneng but currently resides in Lecheng in Tswapong to start inception of initiatives in his home village but will be operating in Jwaneng again next year.
He said he started the initiative early this year with the intension to perform in schools and awarding the sum of P500 to the best Form III student in junior schools and P300 to the best Std VII pupil in primary schools.
He stated that so far he has visited six schools in Tswapong North and south offering entertainment but still awaiting their prize giving ceremonies to award the cash he had promised.
The schools he has so far visited are the three junior schools of Ramokgonami, Mokobeng and Mokgalo in Lecheng and three primary schools of Lecheng, Matlhakola and Malaka.
He stated that he was motivated to come up with this initiative after he realised that education standard in the country was declining. He said since the students’ performances were dropping every year he thought the little he could offer would inspire them to take their studies seriously for better results.
Not only that, he said he also realised children spend most of their time playing TV games and watching movies rather than reading books and therefore he was hopeful that this initiative will keep them focused on studies.
He said usually he offered schools free entertainment as a way of helping them in their fund raising activities. “The little that students pay at the gate during my performances in schools helps them in times like prize giving ceremonies,” he said. But this time his objective is to nurture education in rural areas.
He said he is targeting about 50 or more schools from next year and aims to partner with other stakeholders like Ministry of Health, youth department and BOSASNET to help improve education and also encourages Batswana and companies to give support to this initiative. ENDS
