27 Aug 2015

Letlhakeng Sub-district will on Saturday August 29 hold the annual Miss RADP beauty pageant at Sesung Community Hall.

In an interview, the organiser and senior community development officer for Letlhakeng Sub-district, Gerald Mahumba said the beauty pageant would be used to identify the beauty queen who would represent the sub-district at the district beauty pageant competitions slated for next month.

“After the district finals the queen and her first princess will represent the whole district at the grand finale in Gaborone on November 22 this year,” he said.

Mahumba said their office has already mobilised 21 participants from the five settlements in the sub-district with Kaudwane and Sorilatholo producing three participants each, Khekhenye producing two, Diphuduhudu having four while Tshwaane has the bulk of the representatives with nine.

“We divided our sub-district into two clusters being Kaudwane-Sorilatholo-Diphuduhudu as well as Tshwaane-Khekhenye. In each cluster, we took the top 10 or 11 participants to make the pool to take part at the sub-district final,” he said.

Mahumba said the Miss RADP pageant was started three years ago with the objective of promoting cultural preservation, identifying talent among the remote area dwellers as well as to empower young women from these settlements.

“It is in this regard that the pageant is geared towards empowering them economically so that they also benefit from the rapid economic development of the country,” he said.

Mahumba said after the national event, the winner’s benefits were that they were assisted to secure jobs or even scholarships. He also said they use the princess to motivate other residents from the remote areas. The reigning Miss RADP chooses a community project that could benefit remote area dwellers and she becomes its face,” he said.

For the Letlhakeng Sub-district pageant, Mahumba said they were expecting a number of performers from within the sub-district to spice up the event.

The lineup includes among others renowned traditional music artists, Kgobola, Letlhakeng Dancing Masters, Ivy, K-Ras and DJs 90 and Thebe. Ends
