Bogosi here to stay
23 Aug 2015
The institution of bogosi is here to stay and no government can afford to do away with it, says Assistant Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Mr Frans Van Der Westhuizen.
Addressing attendants at the inauguration of Kgosi Opelo Seboni in Kumakwane recently, Mr Van Der Westhuizen said dikgosi were part of the democratic dispensation.
He added either the present government nor any government in future would think of abolishing bogosi.
“It is an institution that no one can make disappear. No government will want to do away with the institution of bogosi,” he emphasised.
He dispelled perceptions that bogosi has no role to play, adding that it would be unfortunate if some politicians disrespect the institution. “They left a legacy that we have to cherish, protect and nurture,” added Minister Van Der Westhuizen.
He said bogosi played a huge role in present day Botswana and that bogosi and the kgotla system remain relevant in the governance of modern Botswana.
The assister minister noted that the constitution of the country recognises bogosi and that it provides for the existence of Ntlo ya Dikgosi as an advisory body to Parliament.
He added that stability and peace has been achieved through various functions presided by dikgosi such as trying civil and criminal cases.
Mr Van Der Westhuizen further commended the succession of the Kumakwane bogosi, saying it was conducted smoothly.
“I must explain that my ministry is currently inundated with succession disputes which are detrimental to social harmony and development,” he added.
The Member of Parliament for Thamaga-Kumakwane, Mr Tshenolo Mabeo said the country’s culture, heritage and traditional beliefs continue to outshine modern ways of democracy.
Mr Mabeo, who is also Minister of Transport and Communications, said bogosi remains an indispensable institution.
For his part, Bakwena paramount leader, Kgosi Kgari III urged Kgosi Seboni to work harmoniously with the community.
Furthermore, he encouraged residents to take pride in their chief and advised him to respect all people. He further wished him a long life.
Accepting the responsibility tto lead the community, Kgosi Seboni said he was looking to God for the wisdom to lead his tribe.
Kgosi Seboni promised to work harmoniously with all people through consultations with his community to deal with community challenges and to drive developments.
He further pointed out that one of the main challenges for the community was illegal sand mining in their surroundings. Ends
