Fodder planting offers alternative official

Fodder production is a cost-effective way of earning a living due to the fact that backyard horticulture is slowly becoming saturated in Gumare.
Speaking in an interview recently, the poverty eradication assistant in the village, Mr Bathusi Mogorosi said the youth in Gumare should try alternative farming practices such as fodder production to improve their livelihood.
“I highly recommend fodder production as well as other alternatives like conservation farming and bee keeping. Conservation farming is important in preserving the plants’moisture,” said Mr Mogorosi.
He noted that beneficiaries for backyard horticulture in his region were too many hence it was difficult for them to penetrate the market.
Mr Mogorosi said bales of fodder were beneficial to pastoralists, especially during times of drought.
He said fodder production was also a healthier supplement for cattle and helps in digestion and that all these factors show that indeed it was a good investment to pursue.
Furthermore, he said bee keeping has other products that could be harvested and put to use including bee wax, and that the youth should refrain from choosing monotonous businesses and rather opt for trades that could sustain them.
He commended the youth of Gumare for joining the poverty eradication programme, especially arable faming even though they were facing challenges such as pests and lack of rainfall. ENDS
