Miss Kanye on cards

11 Aug 2015

A youthful 10 member group from Kanye will host the first annual Miss Kanye beauty pageant on September 26 to raise funds to adopt Seepapitso Senior Secondary School.

Speaking in an interview yesterday, the group spokesperson Maipelo Tlhomelang said the pageant will target beauties aged 14-24 years. She said auditions will be held at Sampi Lodge on 29th August. She said they would have a road show at Mongala mall to market the event.

She further disclosed that they have opened a Facebook page, Misskanye, to give the show the widest publicity possible.

Tlhomelang said the initiative was driven by a need to address the ever declining performance of the school since the late 1990s.

She explained that the pageant, which would be held in the school hall, is part of a series of activities lined up to raise funds for the adoption.

The girls would parade in traditional animal skin and German print dresses.

She said the attire is intended to give the audience a glimpse of Bangwaketse culture.

Tlhomelang revealed that they have a three year strategic plan to work with the school management and the Parents Teachers Association to improve the academic fortunes of the school. She said their group consists of educational reforms specialists who would help roll out the plan.

Another member of the group,  Nametso Mosimanegape, said that they plan on working hand in hand with the Social and Community Development office to identify needy students to assist them with school uniform.

She said that they would also mobilise capable residents of Kanye to volunteer tutorial classes for students with learning difficulties.

She said the eventual winner of the pageant would be trained on public speaking to capacitate her to address students on issues like drug and alcohol abuse, which often derail them from their studies. ENDS
