Local business people who exhibited at the inauguration of Serokolwane Wedding Expo say the initiative was not only entertaining but also a boost to their new and unknown businesses.

Serokolwane Farms’ ambiance was all colour and relaxing as wedding facilitating companies displayed their products. Members of the public were spoilt for choice given what the exhibitors put up.

The event gathered together entertainers, fabric suppliers and fashionistas who showcased wedding gowns, bridal outfits, caterers and wine dealers among others.

One of the exhibitors, Bokamoso Kumwenda, owner of Timeless Treasures Jewelry by BK revealed that although it was her first exhibition, she was happy about the response she got.

BK, who is based in Oman, in the Middle East said that the exhibition has encouraged her to do more. “I sell most of my things through online and I am confident to get more clients after the expo. Being part of this has made me realise how people are still thirsty for my products.”

She uses beads to create exquisite handmade neckpieces, bangles, rings amongst others that transcend borders as she uses Japanese beads. She said the Japanese beads are good for her craft as their sizes are consistent.

“In the past, I didn’t like beads as I associated them with Sangomas, but I had to learn about them and realise that there are more possibilities about beads,” she said.

The jeweler, who holds BA Humanities, majoring in French and English said that she was inspired by her late cousin, who created earrings out of beads. She said after her death in 2011, she developed interest in the craft.

She researched online, bought books and realised that there was more to the craft. In 2012 while in Oman, she started and the response was positive.

BK said that drove her to learn more techniques and said now she uses needle and thread, and crotchet and hook. “Today’s response has reawakened my plan of having a shop as well as having jewelry teaching classes. It is a skill that I can teach others and create more jobs,” she added.

The owner and managing director of Nicopolis Apartments, Millie Rutang said it was a good move given that there are few wedding expos around.

Millie said the event was a success though she had expected more given the impressive marketing of the event. Millie said that the event’s exhibitors were relevant as they were people who play a role in wedding ceremonies.

“I was happy as I was the only one offering accommodation and interest was more on me, and I think big players in our industry should also come in for future expos.” She said the expo is an encouraging move to have as it also spurs their businesses.

Serokolwane Lawns spokesperson, Thato Mahube said they were delighted by the turnout from both the exhibitors and the walk-ins. She said although the expo is new they were also stimulated by many exhibitors who showcased their services.

Thato said that Serokolwane Lawns will hold the exhibition annually, and said she is confident that the event will grow with time.

“The expo is still in its infancy and some people were not certain about what they will get from this, so more will come on board in the next edition.”

She said having such expos afford exhibitors an opportunity to share ideas and sell their businesses to the consumers. Ends
