Gaborone West Police are investigating an incident that led to the death of a St Joseph’s College student.
According to Ass Supt. Seitiketso Mpusetsang, two men aged 19 and 21 reportedly posed as if they wanted to buy a car from a Nigerian car dealer in Mogoditshane on July 22. They reportedly took the car on a test drive towards Metsimotlhabe in the presence of the dealer and showed interest in buying it.
They then led the dealer to Game City Mall under the pretext that they were going to withdraw money from the bank. On arrival, they told him that they were not in possession of their identity cards.
On their way back to collect identity cards, near Gaborone Technical College, the two suspects withdrew knives and threatened the dealer who managed to disembark the moving vehicle after the duo robbed him of three cellphones and P2 000.
The suspects then fled using the said vehicle. They tried to overtake another vehicle at Kgale View, Block 9, only to lose control and hit a student of St Joseph’s College.
The student was certified dead on arrival at the hospital. The suspects, who want out on bail, are likely to face charges of armed robbery and causing death by dangerous driving.
Ass Supt Mpusetsang appealed to car dealers to be vigilant at all times when dealing with would be car buyers as some want to swindle them. He urged them to maintain a register to record all particulars of would be buyers before the vehicle leaves the garage as that can assist the police in their investigations. Ends
