Comedy drama prove popular

12 Jul 2015

President’s Day drama and comedy event has proven to be a favourite to many, given the turnout.

The competition attracted a huge audience over the weekend and, just like during choral music competition, there was a problem of limited space at the Maitisong Hall.

It was nothing but immense talent portrayed by Batswana in theatre and comedy industry.

Officially opening the event, Minister of Transport and Communications, Tshenolo Mabeo, said government was aware of the challenges facing the theatre industry in Botswana, hence the support government extended to the arts through the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Culture.

Minister Mabeo said many Batswana graduated in theatre area but could not make ends meet through the industry.

Thus, he said the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Culture was working around the clock to establish the second TV channel in Btv to give talent exposure.

He said with much exposure, talent in performing arts could get recognition in foreign markets, adding that if fully supported, the theatre industry could grow big.

The minister also noted that comedy worldwide had proved to be a much appreciated form of entertainment, hence the need for support.

Minister of Youth, Sport and Culture, Thapelo Olopeng, noted that the performing arts industry had potential, adding that government would continue to give support through competitions such as the President’s Day Celebrations.

Among a panel of theatre judges was Botswana born and South African-based actress and producer, Connie Ferguson.

Those competing over the weekend had won at regional level and drama groups included Molepolole-based Peo Creations, Serowe’s Tselakgopo, Serala Multi Cultural Arts from Kang and Chobe Arts of Kasane.

Comedians’ line up was made up of Kabo Keitheng, Joshua Kenosi, Gomotsegang Kgaileng, Oefile Mokgware, Sidimba Shitah, Kaelo Diphofu, Aobakwe Moratiwa and Kabelo Matlou, while Mokgware emerged the winner of 2015 comedy competition. Ends
