23 Jun 2015

Police in Lobatse are investigating an incident in which two women aged 35 years perished along the Lobatse-Gaborone road on Friday (June 19) afternoon.

Woodhall police station commander, Superintendent Tebogo Madisa, said in an interview that the accident occurred around 6 m near Nnywane River. It involved a police mini-bus carrying 19 passengers and a sedan with five on board.

He said the mini-bus was on-transit from Lobatse to Otse Police College while the other vehicle was travelling from Gaborone to Lobatse.

According to Supt Madisa, the vehicles collided after the mini-bus driver veered off his lane while attempting to avoid some bags of bran in the middle of the road. He lost control of his vehicle and hit the on-coming car.

He said 11 passengers from the mini-bus sustained minor injuries. They were treated at the hospital and discharged the same day. Seven sustained serious injuries: four of them were admitted at Athlone Hospital in Lobatse, and three at Princess Marina Hospital in Gaborone.

“The deceased are at Athlone Hospital morgue awaiting post mortem,” he said. Supt Madisa said the relatives of the deceased had been notified. One of the deceased is a police officer based in Gaborone while the other is a Lobatse resident.

He said police investigations are still underway.  The owner of the bran bags and the two drivers are assisting them with investigations. Ends
