Mobile court to expedite cases

02 Jun 2015

President Lt Gen. Seretse Khama Ian Khama toured the special mobile traffic court at the Gaborone High Court yesterday (June 2).

The mobile court, which is a white bus fitted with a magistrate stand, accused’s dock and gallery, was procured for the Gaborone Regional Magistrate Court.

Chief Justice Maruping Dibotelo explained that the mobile court would be used to expedite the handling of traffic cases by the judicial system. He said the mobile court would travel to various areas where its services would be required.

However, Dibotelo said the mobile court will also be used to try other cases such as stock theft cases. “The intention is to take services closer to the people and reduce the amount of time people wait to have their cases tried. Very soon we would commence operating these mobile traffic courts,” Dibotelo said.

He said the intention of government was to buy the mobile courts for 10 magistrate courts.  These are in Gaborone, Maun, Letlhakane, Mochudi, Palapye, Lobatse, Hukuntsi, Selebi Phikwe, Francistown, and Lobatse.

Dibotelo said funds had been availed to buy other mobile courts for magistrate courts in Francistown, Maun, Palapye and Mochudi this financial year.  He said each bus costs P2.6 million.

The president was accompanied in his tour by the Vice President, Mr Mokgweetsi Masisi, the Minister of Justice, Defence and Security, Mr Shaw Kgathi, and Minister of Transport and Communications, Mr Tshenolo Mabeo. ENDS
