Battle of trumpets beckons

09 Apr 2015

The Mascom Live Sessions return to BotswanaCraft this year.

The sessions will see the legendary South African jazz maestro, Hugh Masekela, and Botswana’s very own, Socca Moruakgomo, in the battles of the trumpets as they look to get the sessions off to a blistering start.

Come April 24, BotswanaCraft will host two of the most recognised jazz artists as they look to kick off the fifth year edition of the Mascom Live Sessions in style.

Masekela is not new to Botswana as he performed in the country a multiple of times and he has always brought his A game to every performance. His latest performance in Gaborone was at the inaugural Hamptons Live Jazz Festival at Duma FM Grounds where he blew the crowd away with his stage antics.

Even though Bra Hugh, as he is popularly known to his legion of fans, in comparison to Moruakgomo, stands well above his counterpart, they have achieved a lot in their respective careers.

Fans of both artists will get a chance to see the elder statesman of Bra Hugh’s caliber sharing a stage with Socca Moruakgomo who is also not new to BotswanaCraft.Moruakgomo, who studied music in the Botswana army, The Royal School of Music in the United Kingdom and New York’s Juilliard School of Music, has had his fair share of success and has collaborated with amazing artists on his projects.
Having credited his album titled ‘Your Smile’ that he launched a couple of years back at BotswanaCraft with finding his sound, he has not looked back.

Moruakgomo indicated then that the Afro jazzy album was recorded in South Africa with the country’s respected session musicians, such as percussionist Godfrey Mgcina, and accordion, harp and organ player, Mthandeni Mvelase, while ‘Kalahari’, his previous mbaqanga driven album was recorded in Amsterdam and Paris.
Moruakgomo has continued to woe fans with his music countrywide and he keeps on getting better.

Speaking in an interview, Managing Director of BotswanaCraft, Oliver Groth said people should expect top notch entertainment from the two musos.
“Tickets are already available and they go for P300,” he said, adding that they should be bought in advance. ENDS
